Musical Chairs on British Airways...

British Airways... lagging behind democracy...

I have never flown British Airways before, as most of the time they are overpriced, but thanks to the SAFAIR ruling, I found myself travelling back from Cape Town  to Johannesburg on a BA flight. My partner and I arrived at the counter two hours before check in was due to close, and we were rudely informed that the flight was over booked and we no seats were available. When I protested and indicated my disdain, especially at the fact that at no point were we told to book seats online the day before. I was crudely informed that is standard practice to over book the flights and there is nothing that can be done. If that woman had been anymore patronising, she might as well have been talking to a crap in a toilet bowl.
We were eventually put on a flight that was four hours later, and a gentleman politely & thoroughly explained and more importantly apologised, even to the extent of a gesture of apology. As we walked to the boarder gate I thought how grateful I was to that gentlemen and his great customer service....
Only to arrive at the gate and then next thing my partner’s seat allocation has suddenly been changed, and not a single person informed me or him. I ask about this and suddenly nobody has a clue how it happened. On the flight at least four other passengers were double booked in the same seat and when I got to my seat there was just utter chaos, as a minor had been seated in an Emergency exit.

Playing Musical Chairs...

Needless to say I ended seated next to a hyperactive stranger, whilst my partner sat 6 rows in front of me- bottom line is that someone took it upon themselves to move my partner and I into separate seats because we do not have the same surname, and assumed we were not a couple (despite checking in together) – so by virtue of us not being legally married (never mind that we are engaged) it was appropriate for us to be split so that other families could sit together? He is my family!  BA this South Africa discrimination of all kind is exactly what we have fought against!
